The debate on the Social Security System: reflections from portfolio holders
The sustainability of Social Security, the funding model of its Welfare System, and the present and future adequacy of pensions to the needs of pensioners are issues that have gained new prominence in Portugal in recent years. This prominence was triggered by the creation of the Commission for the Sustainability of Social Security and the publication of the results of this group's work in the Green Paper on the Sustainability of the Social Security System. This ebook aims to contribute to this reflection and enrich it with the critical analysis of four former Ministers of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security and the current Minister responsible for the portfolio. In five synthetic texts, these protagonists point out relevant clues for an integrated analysis of the Social Security System - in particular the pension system -, the relevance and risks that accompany the proposals to change the system and propose measures that qualify and guarantee the sustainability of the Social Security system.
