The socio-economic consequences of COVID-19 and its uneven distribution

The socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are not a simple translation of a natural danger that affects everyone, but the result of a set of socially constructed and leveraged risks. Even when they have natural origins, risks manifest themselves in the social, economic and political spheres asymmetrically. From a multidimensional perspective, and considering different scales of analysis, this book addresses the social, economic and institutional vulnerabilities of Portuguese society in the face of the pandemic crisis and its socio-economic consequences. The analysis of vulnerabilities is broken down into three fundamental dimensions (susceptibility, exposure and coverage), focusing on the national level, the sector and the socio-occupational sphere. In addition to diagnosing the structural vulnerabilities that affect Portuguese society and place it in a particularly fragile situation in the current context, this book promotes a critical reflection on the emergency policies adopted and points to public policy paths that can contribute to strengthening the economic fabric, improving the quality of employment and reducing inequalities.

Keywords: COVID-19, socio-economic vulnerabilities, emergency policy measures.
