Summary
Study prepared by a multidisciplinary research team made up of experts from the ILO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (EUROPE), the ILO Employment Policy Department (EMPLOYMENT) and the Collaborative Laboratory for Labor, Employment and Social Protection (CoLABOR).The report was prepared at the request of the Government of Portugal. Focusing on the automotive industry in Portugal, it seeks to investigate the interaction between automation and digitalization, as well as changes in business models, the structure of the workforce and general labour market conditions. It assumes that the future of work will not be predetermined by technological changes, but fundamentally determined by socio-economic structures, institutions, the actions of the main players in the sector and public policies. It explores the scope and impact of labour-saving technologies, looks at changes in job profiles and skills requirements, and analyzes how technology affects the workforce, taking into account segmentation patterns in education and training, professions and industry.
